Jay C Kaufman, Attorney

Jay C. Kaufman founded the law firm in 1980. He has spent the last thirty years dedicated to representing individuals, families and closely held businesses. Jay works directly with the firm’s family and business clients in developing and implementing their plans as well as assisting them in solving their everyday financial and business problems.

Early years of Jay’s practice were focused exclusively on estate planning, first in Arlington Heights, then in Buffalo Grove, and most recently in Northbrook, Illinois. In late 2010, the firm opened a second office in Lake in the Hills, Illinois where Jay meets clients at least two days each week.

The firm has previously been known as Jay C. Kaufman, Ltd., Kaufman & Rubin, Ltd., and Jay C. Kaufman, P.C. The firm now practices law as Kaufman Law Group LLC.

Over the years, Jay’s practice expanded to meet client needs in areas including family business as well as the design and administration of tax-qualified retirement plans. In recent years, there has been an increasing need for expertise in serving the needs of seniors. As a result, the firm has developed an active elder law practice.

Jay received his Juris Doctor degree from Northern Illinois University. He is licensed to practice law by the Supreme Court of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Tax Court. Jay is a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association and the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys. He is also an affiliate member of the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries.

Jay’s membership in WealthCounsel and ElderCounsel give him access to resources and a community of more than 1,500 other law firms around the country to serve his increasingly mobile clientele.

Counseling and advocating for his clients requires that Jay dedicate a significant amount of his professional time during the year to staying up to date with constantly changing laws, regulations, tools and techniques. Jay attends the University of Miami Law School’s Heckerling Estate Planning Institute annually. Jay has committed to attending conferences in all his fields of concentration, so he has state-of-the-art tools and techniques available for his clients.

Jay lives in Northbrook with his wife, Karen. They have two adult children who are currently in college. In his spare time, Jay is an amateur chef.

Jay is able to focus on his clients because of his paraprofessional staff, both have been with the firm for several years.
